External perimeter hardening
Anonymised pattern: organisation with public cloud edge, VPN and assorted internet-facing services.
Context
Leadership wanted confidence that the internet perimeter matched the asset inventory — and that exposed services were not offering easy footholds before a broader application test.
Approach
External infrastructure testing against agreed domains and IP ranges: recon, service enumeration, validation of risky exposures, review of email authentication posture and remote-access endpoints. Findings prioritised by realistic external attacker impact. Methodology aligned with external-testing concepts in NIST SP 800-115 and PTES-style engagement structure.
Outcomes (qualitative)
- Unused or misconfigured exposures identified and scheduled for closure
- Clear inventory of in-scope hosts/services delivered with the report
- Follow-up application testing scoped with a cleaner perimeter baseline
